June Leadership Webinar Offers Management Insights, CAM Credit
May 30, 2014
Professor Emeritus Jim Clawson, of the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business, will lead a webinar next month titled, “Leadership: Getting Below the Surface,” which will explore themes in leadership and management that can apply to flight departments, such as building a cohesive team and how to assess the level of buy-in and energy of others in the department.
“We will cover issues of how we act and think strategically about the current state and future of the flight department, including such issues as how to lead teams and lead change, how to sell it to corporate management, and how to follow through,” Clawson said of the June 17 webinar, which is part of NBAA’s On-Demand Education, and provides a way for participants to earn initial or recertification Certified Aviation Manager (CAM) credit.
Clawson, in partnership with his Darden colleague Mark Haskins, has already collaborated with NBAA in writing a cover story for Business Aviation Insider magazine, “Are You A Good Manager?” in the Jan/Feb. 2013 issue of NBAA’s Member publication. Read “Are You A Good Manager?”
In the webinar, Clawson will discuss the six elements of what he calls a “charter” and how it affects a flight department: the purpose statement; a vision statement; a value statement; strategy; short-term operational goals; and finally, who is going to make the decisions so that the charter does not “drift.”
“The role of leadership is to clarify each of the six elements in order to lift the department to make the energy needed to deliver a high level of service,” said Clawson.
With more than 30 years of experience in teaching leadership and management courses to business aviation professionals, Clawson is an expert on the issues and challenges of flight departments and their service goals in relation to the parent company.
“Any member of a flight department – from directors to pilots to schedulers and maintenance staff, and more – will benefit from this rare chance to hear and learn from Professor Clawson,” said Jo Damato, NBAA director of educational development and strategy, and moderator of the webinar. “Not only is he a well-known expert on leadership and managing change, but his years of work and teaching executives in the business aviation industry makes him uniquely qualified to address issues and topics specific to NBAA members in particular.”
The 90-minute webinar begins at 1 p.m. (EDT) and pre-registration is required. Learn more and register for the webinar.
