Phase A of construction, the reconstruction of Runway 24 through the intersection of Runway 11-29, is set to begin July 27 at Connecticut's Sikorsky Memorial Airport (BDR). Runway 11-29 will be closed during this phrase, which is expected to take about 30 days. Runway 11-29 will close when the air traffic control tower closes at 10 p.m. on July 26. Aircraft that require more than the approximately 3,230 feet available with the displaced threshold on Runway 24, or weigh more than 12,500 pounds, should plan to relocate before Runway 11-29 closes. NBAA and Connecticut Group Advocate Against Bill Threatening BDR Runway

NBAA and the Connecticut Business Aviation Group (CBAG) are advocating against a bill in the Connecticut state legislature that threatens the continued use of Runway 6/24 at Sikorsky Memorial Airport (BDR). The bill, S.B. 563, introduced by State Senator Dan Debicella (D 21), would continue to prevent the addition of an engineered material arresting system (EMAS) to Runway 6/24 by extending the moratorium on the relocation of Route 113. Runway 6/24 and Route 113 are currently divided by a blast fence, identified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) as a much less safe means of arresting overruns than EMAS. Until the EMAS is established, the FAA will not authorize desperately needed repairs to Runway 6/24 and has requested BDR close the runway to Part 139 aircraft. NBAA Working to Prevent Shortening of Sikorsky Memorial Airport Runway

For several years, NBAA has worked to promote the establishment of a runway safety area (RSA) at Sikorsky Memorial Airport (BDR) in Bridgeport, CT that would be satisfactory to the FAA, operators and the local community. Recently, the U.S. Army has discussed selling the land where part of the RSA would be located. The absence of this portion of land could force the FAA to reduce the runway length at BDR, making the runway too short for typical jet operations. As this would adversely affect local business, NBAA is working closely with the Connecticut Business Aviation Group, FAA, Flight Operations System and Connecticut state legislators to mitigate any shortening of the runway at BDR. Connecticut Airport Caught in Land-Use And Other Disputes

An urban-development policy organization recently issued a report suggesting that Sikorsky Memorial Airport (BDR) in Bridgeport, CT, be reduced to a commercial park. Home to eight NBAA Member Companies, BDR is located entirely in the town of Stratford, but is owned and operated by the neighboring city of Bridgeport. Because of this setup, the facility has been at the center of several disputes in recent years, and this most recent proposal has the support of the Stratford Town Council Chairman and a Council Member. NBAA and the Connecticut Business Aviation Group Friends of Sikorsky Memorial Airport are addressing this and other proposals to limit or deny operators use of the airport.
