Business Aviation Lends a Hand in Harvey Relief Efforts

Business Aviation Lends a Hand in Harvey Relief Efforts
Business aviation companies, aircraft brokers, general aviation airports, operators and more are among those pitching in to provide aircraft, volunteers and other resources to help in the wake of the destruction left behind by Hurricane Harvey. "When tragedies like Harvey strike, we find that a lot of these entrepreneurs and companies raise their hand and ask, 'I have this asset how can I help?'" Dan Hubbard, NBAA’s senior vice president of communications, told the Houston Chronicle. Visit NBAA’s dedicated web resources, highlighting industry activism, providing operational information and more.

Congress Back in Session, Threat of ATC Privatization Still Looms
As Congress returns from summer recess on Sept. 5, NBAA is encouraging members to step up their level of contact with their elected representatives, to let them know of the business aviation community’s ongoing opposition to H.R. 2997, a bill that would enable ATC privatization. “This is a critical period that could determine the future of business aviation in the United States,” said Christa Lucas, NBAA’s vice president of government affairs. Valuable Safety Events in Focus at NBAA Convention
NBAA welcomes back two important safety events to its convention: the Single Pilot Safety Standdown on Oct. 9 and the National Safety Forum on Oct. 12. Both events are free for NBAA Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (NBAA-BACE) attendees. The 2017 NBAA Single Pilot Safety Standdown will focus on building a safety culture in a small or single-pilot organization, while the third annual NBAA National Safety Forum opens with keynote addresses from FAA and NTSB representatives. Learn more about safety events at NBAA-BACE.

JFK Runway Closure Begins Sept. 5
Runway 4R/22L at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) will be closed from Sept. 5-Nov. 17 to complete an extended construction project. This 73-day closure will likely result in unfavorable configurations at times, which will drive delays at JFK and other area airports.

Point of Impact: Business Aviation Advocates Oppose ATC Privatization – Massachusetts Group Joins the Fight
Airport operators in Massachusetts are engaged in a grassroots campaign against H.R. 2997, proposed legislation to privatize the nation’s ATC system, and leading the way is the Massachusetts Airport Management Association (MAMA). “Our first letter to all of Massachusetts’ senators and representatives went out in late June, and we followed that up with another letter in July,” said MAMA Executive Director Dave Dinneen said about the group’s work to mobilize opposition to H.R. 2997.

The traditional charter model could be evolving, experts say, and new business models may be the next generation of this important segment of business aviation. Greg Cirillo of HCH Legal, LLC, along with Greg Johnson of OneSky and Jeff Thoben of YouCanJet will discuss “Uncommon Carriers – How Social Networking Will Bring Air Charter to the Masses,” at the Sept. 7 NBAA Regional Forum in Morristown, NJ.

Taking a Top-Down Approach to Ethics

How can an organization establish a culture of ethical behavior and integrity? "Company ethics training with annual recurrent requirements is so important," said Chris Broyhill, CAM, a member of NBAA's Business Aviation Management Committee. "It reminds employees about conflicts of interest, travel policies, confidentiality, social media, discretion and other ethics-related topics."
