Five Winter Flying Tips for Operations at Smaller Snow-Country Airports
Thorough planning is essential for business aircraft safety year-round, but flying in winter into smaller airports in snow country poses special challenges. These facilities often have small staffs with less snow removal equipment than larger airfields. Some tips for safe winter flying include: reviewing the FAA’s Takeoff and Landing Performance Assessment, confirming avionics are compatible with the airport’s approaches and handling a cold-soaked plane carefully. Aeronautical decisions must be based on sound knowledge of aircraft performance data and complete weather information, said Jeff Hansen, chair of the Utah Business Aviation Association. “Snow country airports usually equal shorter runways and higher elevations that affect performance.” Read more.

SESAR: New Blend of Technologies Would Increase All-Weather Airport Access
Business aircraft operators would be able to land at more airports, in most weather conditions, with an as-yet-unused combination of satellite-based navigation, synthetic vision and enhanced vision technologies, according to the results of a two-year demonstration project in Europe. The demonstration, conducted by a European government-industry group of stakeholders, was led by NetJets Europe. “The idea is to connect curved, satellite-based navigation to a landing system that is able to guide you all the way down in all weather conditions,” said Jean-Philippe Ramu, demonstration project leader. NBAA Now Accepting Applications for Flying Safety Awards
For more than 60 years, NBAA’s Flying Safety Award program has recognized member companies for achievement in maintaining safe flying operations, and brought attention to the industry’s outstanding safety record. Companies and individuals may apply between now and March 1 to gain recognition for 2016 safety accomplishments. Those interested may also apply for one of the three member company Meritorious Safety Awards. Apply now for an NBAA Flying Safety Award.

Call for Speakers Issued for 2017 NBAA-BACE
NBAA is seeking speakers for education sessions at the 2017 NBAA Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (NBAA-BACE), set for Oct. 10-12 in Las Vegas, NV. Proposals for presentations on topics such as business management, human resources, leadership, maintenance, operations and more are welcomed. Proposals are due by Feb. 28.

Operators: New RNAV STAR for LAS for Arrivals From Northeast Expected Jan. 5
The SITEE ONE RNAV STAR will be published on Thursday, Jan. 5, and will be used for traffic arriving at McCarran International Airport (LAS) from the Northeast. It will replace the GRNPA ONE RNAV STAR. Operators should file the SITEE ONE RNAV STAR starting Jan. 5 if operating an aircraft capable of the standard RNAV procedure.

Updated NBAA Federal Excises Taxes Guide Now Available
The IRS has released inflation adjustments to certain air transportation taxes, effective for calendar year 2017. The domestic segment fee has increased to $4.10, the international head tax has increased to $18.00 and the Alaska/Hawaii departure tax has increased to $9.00, while the percentage property tax for persons remains 7.5 percent and for property remains 6.25 percent.

New Version of CAM Study Guide Now AvailableNew Version of CAM Study Guide Now Available

The NBAA Certified Aviation Manager (CAM) Governing Board has produced a new version of the CAM Study Guide. Unlike previous versions of the study guide, the new one is available on the NBAA website, with access available by paid subscription. The updated CAM Study Guide includes the new version of the CAM Job Analysis, a list of all the references used in the exam and some test-taking tips. Learn more.
