NBAA 20th Anniversary S&D Conference Will Honor History of Profession

“Honoring Our Heritage – Reaching For New Heights” is the theme of NBAA’s 20th Annual Schedulers & Dispatchers (S&D) Conference, which will be held January 13–16, 2009, in Long Beach, CA. To celebrate the Conference’s milestone anniversary, numerous special events have been planned, ranging from a display of S&D memorabilia to creation of a yearbook of memories of past Conferences and schedulers’ accomplishments over the last two decades.

While the 20th Annual Conference will be a special occasion, the S&D Committee continues to ensure that the event offers an expanding array of training, educational, professional development and networking opportunities for all business aviation professionals, not just schedulers and dispatchers. The 2009 Conference will feature nearly three-dozen seminars geared toward enhancing the professional and personal skills of all types of flight department employees. In addition, five Scheduler Professional Development Program (SPDP) courses will be offered immediately prior to the event.

Educational Sessions for Everyone

As usual, Conference workshops and seminars will cover a variety of topics, from basic scheduling and how to obtain a dispatch license, to international operations and how to promote the value of your flight department. In addition, numerous technical topics will be covered, including safety management systems, aircraft runway performance and tax treatment of business aircraft.

S&D Conference sessions with broad appeal will include “Fuel Saving Tools You Can Use,” “Managing Risk in an Emergency,” “Improving Your Managerial Effectiveness,” “Flight Department Budgeting,” “Accounting and Finance Fundamentals” and “Global Cultural Etiquette.”

The SPDP courses being offered in conjunction with the 20th Annual S&D Conference include: “Scheduler and Dispatcher Function,” “Highly Effective Work Teams,” “Human Factors,” “International Operations” and “Finance and Budgeting Accounting.” All SPDP classes will be held at the Hyatt Regency Long Beach, which is the headquarters hotel located next to the Long Beach Convention & Entertainment Center, where most of the Conference activities will take place.

S&D Committee Chair Anne-Marie Smith believes there are several reasons why the Conference is attracting a diversity of Attendees. “We’ve seen a growing number of flight department managers attend because it’s an ideal venue to foster business relationships in a smaller setting. The Association’s Annual Meeting & Convention will always be the number-one place to do business, but I believe the S&D Conference fills a niche. And the educational content of the Conference has grown to include subjects that are of interest to anyone in aviation, not just schedulers and dispatchers.”

While the 20th anniversary gala on the evening of January 15 will be the culmination of the 2009 Conference, presentation of the inaugural NBAA S&D Outstanding Achievement and Leadership Award will be a particularly poignant moment for many industry veterans, as one of the leaders of the scheduling profession will be recognized for extraordinary service.

Get Involved in S&D Milestone Event

Earlier this year, the NBAA Schedulers & Dispatchers (S&D) Committee asked veteran schedulers and dispatchers to donate or loan S&D memorabilia that could be displayed at the 20th anniversary S&D Conference, and several people responded. Now, the Committee is asking schedulers and dispatchers to share their memories of past Conferences as well as career highlights. To download a form to share memories, visit www.nbaa.org/events/sdc/. In addition, Members are also asked to vote for the top S&D milestones at www.nbaa.org/events/sdc/.
