NBAA Sponsoring Washington, DC High Schoolers Trip to NBAA-BACE

Oct. 11, 2018

NBAA, in partnership with the Aero Club Foundation of Washington DC, is, for the first time, sponsoring 10 students from the NAF Academy of Engineering at Phelps Architecture, Construction and Engineering High School in Washington, DC to attend the NBAA Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (NBAA-BACE).

The 11th graders, along with two staff members, will take part in Careers in Business Aviation Day, held on the final day of NBAA-BACE.

“We honor the commitment that Phelps is making to send their students to NBAA-BACE, and are looking forward to introducing them to all that a career in business aviation has to offer,” said Peter Korns, NBAA manager, tax, operations and workforce engagement.

“This will be a unique experience for our students, which will help them decide what careers they want to have,” said Olatundun Teyibo, director, NAF Academy of Engineering at Phelps. “Any opportunity to connect learning to the ‘real world’ is so much appreciated.” According to Teyibo, this is the first time the academy has sent many students to an event this far away, and the juniors are very excited.

“I am looking forward to learning more about engineering careers in aviation,” said student Davon McGill. “I’ve never participated in anything like this before.” Davon’s mother Patrice McGill, said, “As the parent of a young man that’s not usually exposed to this type of experience, it’s very important for him to know that anything is possible with hard work and dedication. This opportunity will show him what his future could be."

Phelps principal Joshua Emmett thanked NBAA and the Aero Club Foundation of Washington, DC for working with his high school in providing science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) opportunities for the students.

“Going to NBAA-BACE and participating in the Career Day event will have a great impact on our students’ high school experience,” said Emmett.
