NBAA Warns of Phony Convention Directories and Guides

The National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) is once again warning Exhibitors for the upcoming 64th Annual Meeting & Convention (NBAA2011) to be wary of directory and show guide publishers falsely claiming to represent NBAA.

NBAA is the only official publisher of show guides for Association-hosted events, including NBAA2011, which will be held Monday, October 10 through Wednesday, October 12 in Las Vegas, NV. Exhibitors also should be on guard for solicitations from "rogue" housing companies, exhibit companies and any other unauthorized companies.

NBAA has received complaints of at least two companies – Expo-Guide and Fair Guide – who have claimed to publish show guides for NBAA2011, according to Maureen Cameron, NBAA marketing director, conventions, seminars & forums.

"Frequently, what happens is people submit the forms sent by these and other companies, and are billed for a page in a directory or guide," Cameron said. "We're not certain that anything ever gets published. It's something that happens to trade shows everywhere, not just NBAA."

These publishers cull names from the NBAA web site. The solicitations include wording that sounds official, although it often includes a disclaimer that says the publishers are independent and not affiliated with NBAA. Once a company fills out the form and sends it in, they are charged nearly $2,000.

Cameron said the problem surfaces every year and generates a fair amount of NBAA Exhibitor complaints. "We urge Exhibitors to review all solicitations carefully, particularly those received by fax and e-mail," Cameron said, adding that Exhibitors are asked to report a third-party solicitation that claims to represent NBAA to her at

The official NBAA2011 Show Guide & Directory of Exhibiting Companies has become quite popular with Convention Exhibitors and Attendees, and for good reason. It includes a host of information on exhibits, education sessions, social gatherings, shuttle bus service and other events at NBAA2011.

Exhibitors receive one free complimentary listing per booth or static display. Additional listings are $325 each. Exhibiting companies receive log-in information to access the Show Guide database.

The deadline for insertion orders for paid advertising in the NBAA2011 Show Guide is August 29. Materials must be received by September 6.

Any person who attends an NBAA convention, conference, seminar or other program grants permission to NBAA, its employees and agents (collectively "NBAA") to record his or her visual/audio images, including, but not limited to, photographs, digital images, voices, sound or video recordings, audio clips, or accompanying written descriptions, and, without notifying such person, to use his or her name and such images for any purpose of NBAA, including advertisements for NBAA and its programs.
