Mayors of five cities in three states recently added their voices to those of hundreds of others across the nation praising general aviation (GA). Mayors of Tallahassee, FL; Montpelier, VT; Fairmont, WV; Martinsburg, WV; and Wheeling, WV, issued proclamations designating December and January as times to honor the value of the industry to their local economies. "West Virginia (airports) provide access for businesses and tourists to isolated areas, enabling businesses to remain part of the nation's air transportation system and connected to the global marketplace," said Wheeling, WV, Mayor George A. Ohio, 11 Cities Recognize General Aviation Appreciation Month

Ohio Gov. John Kasich and Lt. Gov. Mary Taylor this month issued a proclamation designating December as “General Aviation Appreciation Month,” and encouraged all state residents to join the observance. This was the fifth such annual proclamation by Kasich. In addition to Ohio’s proclamation, eight city leaders in Ohio, along with mayors in Florida and Minnesota, recently issued general aviation appreciation month proclamations. Business Aviation Saluted by Texas and 18 Cities Nationwide

In proclaiming November as Aviation Appreciation Month, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said that the aviation industry, including business aviation, is "critical" to the state's economy and its way of life. "It brings families together, transports business executives to important meetings, delivers essential cargo, provides life-saving medical evacuation, police search and rescue, utilty grid and oil pipeline inspection and border protection, and helps control pests that can wreak havoc on farmer's crops," Abbott. Governors in Alabama and West Virginia, and political leaders of 20 cities and counties, are the latest to announce or restate their support for business aviation. All proclamations contain several principles of the No Plane No Gain advocacy campaign, an ongoing effort to communicate to policymakers and opinion leaders the value of business aviation. Gov. Nikki R. At Half-Year Mark, Support for Business Aviation Among State, Local Officials Proves Strong

At this year's halfway point, dozens of state and local officials across the United States continue to acknowledge the value of value of general aviation, including business aviation, to their communities. In an editorial submitted for a forthcoming edition of General Aviation News, NBAA President and CEO Ed Bolen noted that more than 60 such proclamations have already been issued this year. "Over the past six years, officials in all 50 states and more than 100 cities and counties across the country have formally recognized the value of our industry," Bolen noted. "Each of these acknowledgments demonstrates understanding by local officials of how our industry supports the transportation, economic, humanitarian and other needs of thousands of communities across the United States." More Cities, Counties Recognize Value of General Aviation; Nevada Recognizes NBAA

So far this year, more than a dozen U.S. cities and counties from coast to coast have publicly acknowledged the value of general aviation (GA), including business aviation. Separately, NBAA earned a special recognition from state officials for the Association's work in Nevada. For the fourth year in a row, Ohio Gov. John Kasich declared December General Aviation (GA) Appreciation Month. "Ohio GA airports contribute nearly $5.5 billion, or $478 per capita, to the state's economy yearly," Kasich wrote in his proclamation. He noted that aviation has a total economic impact of $10.5 billion annually in the state and is responsible for generating 17,352 jobs. Eleven More Mayors Recognize the Value of General Aviation

In the past two months, mayors of 11 cities in Maryland, Montana, South Carolina and Wisconsin have issued proclamations recognizing the value of general aviation (GA), including business aviation and local airports. The recent mayoral proclamations reflect the principles of the No Plane No Gain advocacy campaign, an effort launched by NBAA and the General Aviation Manufacturers Association in 2009. Mayors across the country have been issuing GA proclamations at an increasing rate. In all of 2013, just 16 mayors issued proclamations, but by June of this year the count had reached 100, and more are expected before the end of 2014.

Wisconsin Governor Recognizes the Value of Aviation

In conjunction with the Experimental Aircraft Association's (EAA's) AirVenture in Oshkosh, WI, Wisconsin Gov, Scott Walker declared July 28 through Aug. 3 Aviation Week in his state. More than half a million people, from more than 60 countries, are expected to attend AirVenture at Wittman Regional Airport, which celebrates the past, present and future in the world of flight. "Business aviation helps companies in Wisconsin operate in an increasingly competitive environment, and reach far-off customers, suppliers and markets," said NBAA President and CEO Ed Bolen. Kentucky Governor Proclaims July Aviation Appreciation Month

Kentucky Gov. Steven Beshear has again expressed his support for aviation by declaring July "Aviation Appreciation Month." This month's declaration is the second statewide recognition of general aviation (GA) in Kentucky, with the first coming in July 2010. "Aviation employs thousands of Kentuckians and accounts for $1.75 billion in economic activity, and aerospace led Kentucky exports in 2013 with $5.6 billion," the proclamation states. Beshear also singled out hospitals, commercial businesses, multiple large cargo facilities and state tourism as enterprises that benefit from aviation. Read more about aviation in Kentucky.
Scottsdale, AZ Mayor Says, 'No Plane, No Gain'

Last month, Scottsdale Mayor W.J. "Jim" Lane toasted the success of Scottsdale Airpark, issuing a proclamation declaring June as Arizona General Aviation (GA) Appreciation Month. He noted that the 8.5-square-mile airpark, with its well-kept 8,000-foot-long runway, now hosts about 2,200 companies and employs 48,000 people, 28 percent of all the city's working residents. 100 Mayors Declare 'We Appreciate GA'

Mayor Matt Watkins of Pasco, WA on June 12 became the 100th top U.S. city official to proclaim his community’s appreciation of general aviation (GA), including business aviation. Last year, only 16 such local proclamations were issued, but the pace has accelerated rapidly in response to the No Plane No Gain advocacy campaign, sponsored by NBAA and the General Aviation Manufacturers Association. Since Mayor Watkins’ proclamation in June, similar declarations have been made by mayors or city officials of Carson City, NV; Cody, WY; Greeley, CO; Pocatello, ID; and Huntingburg, IN, with more expected soon.
