Building on strong industry support and enthusiasm following its creation last autumn, the NBAA Small Flight Department Subcommittee has issued a “call for support,” inviting all employees of smaller flight operations to comment on the issues they face and their greatest areas of concern.
“Small flight departments – those flying one to two airplanes – comprise more than 80 percent of the NBAA’s membership,” noted Dave Keys, chief pilot for Peace River Citrus Products and chairman of the subcommittee, which operates as part of the NBAA Domestic Operations Committee.
“Our industry is not lacking for resources, but much of that information is tailored to support larger operations,” he noted. “It’s critical that we understand the concerns of smaller flight departments, and that they understand they also have a voice in our association.”
The survey will run throughout February and should take approximately 10 to 15 minutes to complete.

Kristin Huska, president of Beacon Aviation Services and a member of the subcommittee, emphasized that survey responses will help the group tailor any future initiatives to suit the scheduling demands of smaller operators, particularly those whose personnel may not regularly attend industry-sponsored training and safety events.
“Someone with a single airplane often must decide whether to attend an industry gathering, or fly a trip supporting their business,” she explained. “We want their feedback about the issues these smaller flight departments are facing, both short-term and long-term. From there, we’ll be able to determine how NBAA may better support them.”
Keys expects the survey results to be published in late spring. “Based on the responses we received last September, it’s clear there’s a lot of enthusiasm out there for this initiative,” he concluded. “We hope feedback to our call for support will help us continue that momentum.”
