Saint Louis University’s Center for Aviation Safety Research (CASR) is NBAA’s newest approved Professional Development Program (PDP) provider.

The center’s two-day course, Safety Management Systems for Managers, meets PDP Objective Leadership 7, which is to “understand, develop and implement a safety management system (SMS).” The course gives business aviation personnel an overview and grasp of SMS concepts, knowledge and skills to successfully implement an SMS.

Richard Steckel, a senior research assistant at CASR, said the PDP program is a good fit for the center, which aims to help practitioners, researchers and consultants develop sustainable safety initiatives for air transportation and other “high-consequence” industries.

“Becoming a PDP provider is a win-win situation for the provider and the attendees,” Steckel said. “The aviation industry benefits by learning about the latest research as it relates to safety management systems and safety culture. CASR benefits by receiving direct access to, and feedback from, people and organizations in the aviation industry. This keeps the university grounded in the real world. PDP provides the forum to allow this exchange of information between academia and industry.”

The center is part of the Parks College of Engineering, Aviation and Technology, and is located on the university’s main campus in the St. Louis arts district.

“The PDP course is designed to be a traditional classroom course that can be taught here in St. Louis or at a customer’s site,” Steckel added.

With the addition of CASR, NBAA now has a total of 23 PDP course providers.

“We are proud to add Saint Louis University to our distinguished list of PDP providers,” said Sarah Wolf, NBAA project manager for professional development. “These educational institutions and training organizations deliver quality instruction to help students increase their professional knowledge and advance their career goals.”

PDP courses are available year-round at locations across the country and via distance and online learning.
