Schedulers & Dispatchers Scholarships Open Doors on Various Career Paths

September 8, 2011

One goal of the NBAA Schedulers & Dispatchers (S&D) Committee has always been to promote education and training as a means for flight department personnel to increase their professionalism. To meet this objective, the committee created an S&D Scholarship Fund in conjunction with numerous industry donors.

For the 2012 monetary scholarship, funds may be awarded for amounts up to $10,000 per applicant. Additionally, candidates may separately apply for any of 12 diverse training awards, ranging from dispatcher certificate training programs to licensing exam preparation courses.

While the availability of the NBAA scholarships may be generally known, many potential scholarship candidates may not realize the variety of ways the funds can be utilized to further their careers. Recent award recipients provide some examples.

For example, Samuel Foday, an immigrant from Sierra Leone, used his scholarship funds to attend the 2011 S&D Conference, where he became so enthused about a career in aviation that he signed up and subsequently completed a corporate flight attendant training course.

Christopher Lawrence was a college student who became involved in business aviation through a summer internship program, and then used his S&D scholarship to attend a five-day scheduler/dispatcher training course to prepare for a full-time job in aviation.

Sandy Frentz is a veteran scheduler who, recognizing the trend toward increased business flying overseas, decided to use her scholarship funds to attend NBAA’s International Operators Conference.

Allyson Casada is another veteran scheduler who wanted to expand her knowledge of air traffic control by using her scholarship to take training at NBAA’s GA Desk at the FAA’s Air Traffic Control System Command Center.

Those interested in obtaining an S&D scholarship shouldn’t hesitate to apply. To be considered for a monetary and/or training award, candidates must submit all application materials to NBAA no later than October 17, 2011.
