NBAA Posts New Instructional Videos on Aircraft Performance Planning

As a member of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)/Industry Transport Airplane Performance Planning (TAPP) Work Group, NBAA has posted four instructional videos it helped create on aircraft performance planning on its website and YouTube channel.

Work group members, all subject matter experts, premiered the videos at NBAA’s Annual Meeting & Convention in Orlando, and posting them online enables transport aircraft operators to employ them in their individual training programs.

TAPP’s goal is to improve pilot and operator understanding of transport aircraft performance, which leads to improved planning and operation. The work group’s inaugural offering in a planned series of videos addresses long-standing questions and issues frequently faced in planning the performance of transport category airplanes, including FAR Part 91 and 135 requirements. The four videos run between nine and 45 minutes.

“Planning for Takeoff Obstacle Clearance,” the longest video, debuted at the Bombardier Safety Standdown. It covers FAR Part 25 performance requirements, as well as climb performance and obstacle clearance with one engine inoperative (OEI). The video addresses these OEI rules, the FAA-approved ways Part 121 and 135 turbine aircraft operators can comply with them and how they compare to all-engine operating standard instrument departure and obstacle clearance requirements.

“Declared Distances” defines how they relate to Part 25 runway requirements for takeoff and landing. It demonstrates their importance in meeting runway and airport design standards and discusses how they apply in actual takeoffs and landings. It also warns pilots to not trust flight management system takeoff and landing performance calculations when the stored information does not include the runway’s declared distances.

“Landing Distance Assessment” reviews Part 25 certification requirements and their applicability to the approved flight manual’s landing distance data. It shows the differences between weight limitations at takeoff relative to landing field length for Part 121 and 135 operators and the actual landing distance required at the destination or alternate airport. It also reviews FAA SAFO 06012 guidance on assessing landing distances.

“Wet Runway Takeoff Performance” is the shortest video. In exploring takeoff performance planning it explains the unique certification differences between Part 25 wet runway takeoff distance and wet runway V1 data. Again cautioning against using the flight management system as a single data source, it shows why wet runway distance requirements may not be the most limiting factor when departing from a wet runway.
