FAA Issues New NOTAM for Ukraine
July 18, 2014
On July 17, the FAA issued a notice to airmen (NOTAM) prohibiting U.S. flight operations until further notice, in the airspace over eastern Ukraine, due to recent events and the potential for continued hazardous activities.
The restricted area includes the entire Simferopol and Dnepropetrovsk flight information regions (FIR). This action expands a prohibition of U.S. flight operations issued by the FAA in April, over the Crimean region of Ukraine and adjacent areas of the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov.
The FAA said the prohibitions described in the NOTAM would be re-evaluated by Oct. 31, 2014.
Earlier this year, the FAA issued a special federal aviation regulation (SFAR) prohibiting most civil flight operations by United States pilots, and most N-number aircraft, in a section of the Simferopol FIR due to the ongoing situation in Crimea. The prohibited area was established following Russia’s annexation of the Crimea region of Ukraine.
The SFAR was in response to a NOTAM issued by Russia in March “purporting to establish unilaterally a new FIR... in a significant portion of the Simferopol (UKFV) FIR.
