At Washington Forum, Bolen Calls for Continued Recognition of Aviation's Importance
Representing the business aviation community on a panel with fellow aviation advocates during an annual Washington policy forum, NBAA President and CEO Ed Bolen last week repeated his call for federal policies that support the industry as a primary source for America's competitive leadership in the world. "Ours is a great industry," Bolen told the audience of aviation-policy leaders. "We create jobs; we are the world's leader in aerospace technology; we contribute exports; and we move people and cargo around the world." Bolen's comments came during a panel at the Federal Aerospace Forecast Conference focused on the next FAA reauthorization, hosted by the American Association of Airport Executives. GAO Study Highlights Realities of Pilot Shortage
The importance of all aviation, including business aviation, in supporting job creation was highlighted in a recent study by a Government Accountability Office (GAO) that was commissioned by a coalition of aviation associations, including NBAA. For example, the study called attention to the vital role that general aviation plays in helping aspiring candidates build flight time. "Everyone has a sense that there's a shortage of qualified pilots looming, but we wanted to go deeper into the actual data," said NBAA's Chief Operating Officer Steve Brown. "We encouraged the GAO to conduct a broad-based study of the evidence." Read more about the GAO study .

Searching for Ideas to Boost Tomorrow's Aviation Workforce
Why aren't more young people choosing careers in aviation, and what can the industry do to help fill the pipelines? Mike Nichols, NBAA's vice president of operational excellence and professional development, last week moderated a group discussion on this topic at the annual Federal Aerospace Forecast Conference in Washington, DC. The group's first assignment was to reach consensus around common challenges facing workforce development across the industry. Economic, regulatory and cultural issues all play a part in the challenges they identified. Ideas to combat these issues included: addressing the cost of achieving required certificates/ratings and updating regulatory requirements to reflect the skill sets required for aviation in the 21st century. No Plane No Gain Message Featured at Annual Washington Aviation Forecast Conference
At last week's Federal Aerospace Forecast Conference attended by leading aviation figures in Washington, NBAA and GAMA ensured that business aviation's value was front and center for the hundreds of event attendees. NBAA included in attendee totes the No Plane No Gain campaign's Top Ten booklet, which features commentary from 10 respected CEOs, each affirming how business aviation works for their companies. In the same conference tote, GAMA provided attendees with the association's 2013 General Aviation Statistical Databook & 2014 Industry Outlook, which – echoing a central No Plane No Gain theme – starts with a prominent reminder, on the booklet's inside cover, that the industry employs more than 1.2 million people, and provides a $150 billion annual contribution to the U.S. economy. NBAA this month is marking its fifth anniversary of using Facebook and Twitter to share Association news and publicize its advocacy efforts to Members, industry, public officials and the press. The vibrant social media tools have become a vital resource for communicating information about the value of business aviation and confronting negative stereotypes about the industry. "These tools also help us to be available to the business aviation community wherever NBAA Members are, and that's why we got into this space," said Jason Wolf, NBAA director of Internet communications. "If you're not there, it's a void. It's like not having a fax machine 20 years ago." .

FEATURED STORY

Reduce Distractions by Maintaining a Sterile Cockpit
Unfortunately, aviation history is replete with examples of flight crews that became distracted during critical phases of flight and paid the price for their lack of focus. A review of more than 60 cockpit incidents logged in the Aviation Safety Reporting System shows that idle conversations and other distractions on the flight deck are all too common. More than half resulted in altitude busts, and five resulted in takeoffs and landings without clearances. What can pilots do to avoid distractions and maintain a sterile cockpit? Read the full article in the 6th Annual Safety Issue of Business Aviation Insider .

New York Aviation Jobs Act Included in State Senate Budget
NBAA strongly encourages Members in New York to support the Aviation Jobs Act, which the state Senate has included as part of its proposed budget. This measure would exempt general aviation aircraft purchased in New York from sales and use tax as is done in neighboring states. With the Aviation Jobs Act language in the Senate budget, it is critical Members contact their legislators now as a joint conference committee is being convened to finalize the budget. To achieve success, the Aviation Jobs Act must be included in the final budget report from the conference committee. Learn more and contact legislators .
