NBAA Mourns the Passing of NASAO CEO Henry Ogrodzinski
NBAA last week paid tribute to the life and contributions to the aviation community made by Henry M. Ogrodzinski, president and chief executive officer of the National Association of State Aviation Officials (NASAO), whose passing was announced on Jan. 23. In addition to his leadership at NASAO, Ogrodzinski held a number of senior posts at the Experimental Aircraft Association, General Aviation Manufacturers Association, Gulfstream Aerospace and the United States Air and Trade Show. "For decades, Henry 'O.' has been a constant, strong and effective advocate for general aviation," said NBAA President and CEO Ed Bolen. "Henry was one of our industry's great statesmen, and his passion for general aviation was infectious. We will miss him greatly." Read more about Ogrodzinski and his dedication to general aviation .

NBAA's Bolen Salutes Aviation Legend Russ Meyer at Wichita Tribute
NBAA President and CEO Ed Bolen on Jan. 25 paid tribute to general aviation community legend Russell W. Meyer at a ceremony, hosted by the Wichita Aero Club, to honor Meyer's nearly 50-year legacy of championing the industry's interests. During the event, the organization awarded Meyer its fourth annual Wichita Aero Club Trophy. "It is very appropriate for Russ to receive this honor, because it's hard to imagine someone who's done more for his 'adopted hometown' of Wichita than he has," Bolen remarked while introducing Meyer on the stage where Meyer received the award at the Wichita Aero Club Gala. "He is one of the most significant figures in general aviation history, and has probably had the largest impact on aviation policy than any other single person in the United States." NBAA Shows Students How Business Aviation Works
A group of college aviation students and educators recently visited NBAA's Washington, DC headquarters to learn about career opportunities in business aviation, and how industry advocates work with legislators and regulators for the industry's betterment. The students were participating in the 23rd Annual University Aviation Association (UAA) "Aviation Policy Seminar." Students and faculty members from UAA-member institutions visited NBAA as part of a week-long seminar to get an overview of how associations, industry and government work together to establish aviation policy. Experts See Positive Signs in Business Aviation Industry Indicators
Analysts are hoping that 2014 will be the year when business aviation finally "recovers" from the Great Recession, and there are a number of encouraging signs emerging as the year gets underway. J.P. Morgan's Aerospace and Defense analysis for January 2014 says demand for new business jets "remains weak," but the bank's analysts added: "Our confidence in a recovery is based on leading indicators such as falling used [aircraft] inventory…and faster GDP [gross domestic product] growth." NBAA's Board Elects Jim Schwertner as Newest Director
The Board of Directors of NBAA has elected Jim Schwertner as the organization's newest director. Schwertner brings a wealth of business, aviation and non-profit executive experience to NBAA's board. The Texas Tech University alumnus earned a bachelor of science degree in agricultural economics in 1974, and today serves as president and CEO of Schwertner Farms, Inc., d/b/a Capitol Land & Livestock. Schwertner also chairs the board of Schwertner State Bank, and is a partner in MidTex Livestock Market and Lockhart Livestock Market in Texas. Schwertner is an air transport-rated pilot who flies helicopters and seaplanes, is type-rated in the Cessna Citation CE-525S, and holds a world speed record in a Piper Navajo. Safety Spotlight: Bissell's Clean Safety Record Built on Trust
In conjunction with the 2014 NBAA Flying Safety Awards application period, NBAA is profiling a series of 2013 recipients of the Safe Flying Achievement Awards, which honor those companies reaching the safety milestone of flying for many decades without an aviation accident. This week's safety profile subject is Bissell, Inc., a 50-Year Safe Flying Achievement Award recipient. A Grand Rapids, MI-based producer of tools that clean floors and carpets, Bissell strives to be "best in class in all we do," said Clint Fereday, the company's director of aviation. Sport a No Plane No Gain Pin, Start a Conversation
Universal Weather and Aviation Inc.'s 1,700 employees worldwide are sporting No Plane No Gain pins this year, and they also will hand out 1,300 more pins to government officials in more than a dozen countries. Anybody working in business aviation can use the pin as a conversation starter, or just wear it as a show of pride in the industry. Pins are free upon request as part of the No Plane No Gain campaign, which educates policymakers and opinion leaders on the value of business aviation to communities, companies and citizens. In almost every state, the New Year signals the start of the legislative season – presenting both opportunities and challenges for regional business aviation groups and NBAA's regional representatives. FAA Issues Procedures Surrounding Super Bowl Traffic for Vegas-Area Airports
Las Vegas TRACON and Los Angeles ARTCC have published traffic management initiatives for air traffic departing Las Vegas-area airports during and after the Super Bowl, which will take place on Feb. 2 in New Jersey. FAA has published a system impact report with specific departure procedures for operators to follow for McCarran, Henderson and North Vegas airports. Parking Reservation Program in Place for Augusta Airports During 2014 Masters
For the first time, there will be no FAA E-STMP air traffic slot reservation requirements for any of the Augusta-area airports during the 2014 Masters Golf Tournament. However, there will be parking reservation requirements for Augusta Regional (AGS), Aiken Municipal (AIK), Thomson McDuffie (/HQU) and Daniel Field (DNL) starting on Friday, April 4 at 5 p.m. local time through Monday, April 14. The mandatory parking reservation program will be managed via a common website for all four area airports, which will go live on March 1. Coming to NBAA's Boca Forum? Stop by FBO Reception Wednesday Evening
The host FBO for NBAA's first Regional Forum of 2014, Signature Flight Support on Florida's Boca Raton Airport (BCT), is hosting a reception this Wednesday, Jan. 29, the evening before the forum. Co-hosted with Silver Lining InFlight Catering, the reception will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in Signature's main hangar, where the indoor exhibit booths will be set up. Member Nominations Due This Week for NBAA's Two Highest Awards
NBAA is accepting nominations through Jan. 31 for its two highest awards, the Meritorious Service to Aviation Award and the John P. "Jack" Doswell Award. The Meritorious Service Award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to aviation. The Doswell Award honors lifelong individual achievement in support of the aims, goals and objectives of business aviation. The 2014 award recipients will be officially recognized at NBAA's Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (NBAA2014) this October in Orlando, FL. Learn more about these NBAA awards .

NBAA Seeks Operator-Developed Education Sessions for 2014 Convention
NBAA recently issued a call for speakers for education sessions at its 2014 Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (NBAA2014), which will take place from Oct. 21 to 23 in Orlando, FL. The Association is specifically seeking proposals for operator-developed, interactive, peer-to-peer educational content in order to provide attendees with the most relevant, useful and timely industry information. "We want operators to share their knowledge and skills with other Convention attendees," said Mike Nichols, NBAA's vice president, operational excellence and professional development. NBAA is seeking a motivated, articulate business aviation professional to fill the position of regional representative for the Southeast U.S. The position is based via telework in the District of Columbia or one of the following states: Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia. NBAA's regional representatives oversee and implement initiatives in their region focused on business aviation advocacy, influencing aviation policy, engaging with the aviation industry and working with Members at the state and local levels. Maintenance Scholarship Applications Now Available
NBAA is currently accepting applications for two of its career-enhancing maintenance scholarship programs. The Maintenance Technical Reward and Career Scholarship, whose application deadline is Feb. 28, underwrites aircraft, engine and avionics training courses at nearly 20 companies and educational institutions. Recipients will be announced at the NBAA Maintenance Management Conference this April in Tampa, FL. The William M. Fanning Maintenance Scholarship, whose application deadline is July 31, provides $2,500 to each of two applicants pursuing careers as maintenance technicians.
