With iPads in So Many Cockpits, Attention Turns to Finding the Right Apps
The annual Convention session titled "Aviation Apps for iPads and Smartphones" is always a favorite of attendees, and this year was no exception. No wonder, with 89 percent of EFB authorizations by the FAA in the last six months for iPads, according to Rick Ellerbrock, chief strategist for aviation at Jeppesen. When attendees were asked to raise their hands if they're currently using iPads on the flight deck, nearly every hand in the room went up. While the NBAA2013 session also covered regulatory requirements for using iPads as EFBs and standard operating procedures, many operators have already put iPads into service and are now focusing on how to get the most out of them. NBAA, Regional Groups Seek Closer Ties

"Collaboration" was the watchword of the networking session, a point brought home by numerous NBAA senior staffers – including Ed Bolen, president and CEO, Steve Brown, chief operating officer, and Lisa Piccione, senior vice president of government affairs – as well as the session's leader, Don Hitch, chairman of the Local and Regional Group Subcommittee of the NBAA Access Committee. Experts Shed Light on Gray Areas of FAA and DOT Compliance
As Part 91 and Part 135 operators know too well, there are a host of FAA and Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations defining how they're allowed to operate, the ways they can structure ownership of their aircraft and how they advertise air travel. When the laws don't line up exactly with the reality of business aviation, this can create gray areas that trip up operators. During NBAA2013, a panel of experts discussed six tricky areas in a session on FAA and DOT regulatory compliance. Read more about this session .
