Astronaut Gene Cernan Receives Meritorious Service to Aviation Award at NBAA2013
A distinguished panel of legendary aviation personalities gathered on Oct. 23 at NBAA's Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (NBAA2013) to honor a man they each point to as an inspiration in their own notable careers and endeavors: Apollo 17 astronaut Eugene "Gene" Cernan, the last man on the moon. "You empower us, you inspire us, you make the world a better place," said famed aerobatic performer Sean D. Tucker, who moderated the panel following the presentation of NBAA's 2013 Meritorious Service to Aviation Award at the event's Second-Day Opening General Session. GA Leaders Panel at NBAA2013 Focuses on Industry Collaboration in Challenging Times
Leaders of the nine top general aviation (GA) associations met today at the GA Leaders Panel, which kicked off the Second Day Opening General Session at NBAA2013. A staple of NBAA's largest event, NBAA President and CEO Ed Bolen moderated the lively discussion about the state of the general aviation industry, including business aviation, in the continuing aftermath of federal budget sequestration and the 16-day government shutdown earlier this month. "The groups up here continue to talk about how we operate in a challenging, tight fiscal environment. How we're going to do it today, and in the future," said Bolen. See Video Highlights from the Second Day of NBAA2013
At NBAA2013 this week, several new planes have debuted at both Henderson Executive Airport and the Las Vegas Convention Center, including the Embraer Legacy 500, the Cessna Citation M2 and the Pilatus PC24. Also in today's video dispatch from the Convention, NBAA President and CEO Ed Bolen spoke about the new Top Ten booklet that features 10 top business leaders who advocate for business aviation. FAA Changes Equipment Suffixes for Domestic Flight Plans
Operators take note: The FAA today is updating the equipment suffixes for domestic flight plans to more accurately indicate the global navigation satellite system (GNSS) capabilities of aircraft. Effective Thursday, Oct. 24 at 0001Z, the closing day of NBAA2013, the /R, /Q, /E, /F, /J and /K suffixes will be removed and replaced with new suffixes, according to the aircraft's equipage for RNAV capability, GNSS capability and RVSM approval. During this week's Convention, NBAA caught up with Rep. Sam Graves (R-6-MO) to hear his thoughts on general aviation, the GA House Caucus, which he co-chairs, and why he is attending NBAA2013. A lifelong aviation enthusiast, Graves has steadfastly championed for the industry since his election to Congress in 2000. Along with Rep. First Operators to Base Aircraft in China Discuss How to Succeed
Panelists representing some of the first American companies to set up flight departments in China took part in a session at NBAA2013 on doing business in China. The panelists spoke to the advantages their companies have found � and the challenges. With airspace only recently opened to business aviation, the regulatory environment is continually evolving, and operators face differing limitations on crew visas, new procedures for pre-clearances and other snarls. Some of those regulatory challenges may improve over time, as NBAA President and CEO Ed Bolen reported that Chinese officials increasingly see business aviation as tied to the country's economic aspirations. At Safety Town Hall, a Two-Way Dialogue on Managing Top Risks
The annual Safety Town Hall meeting was one of the most interactive sessions at NBAA2013, with committee leaders posing questions to the floor and conducting live polls of attendees, who answered on their smartphones. The session also devoted nearly half its time to questions from attendees, with committee leaders committing to address important issues with future initiatives. "We want to hear from you, that's why we're having this session," said NBAA Safety Committee Chairman Eric Barfield. "We really want to have a two-way dialogue." Board Elections Take Place at NBAA Annual Meeting
The voting Membership of NBAA elected five directors during its 66th Annual Meeting held today at the Las Vegas Convention Center during NBAA2013. Additionally, Ron Duncan of General Communications, Inc. succeeded Richard Shine of Manitoba Corp. as chairman, and Paul Anderson of UTFlight will serve as NBAA's new vice chairman and treasurer. NBAA's Outdoor Static Display: A Sight to Be Seen
NBAA2013 is featuring 83 aircraft at this year's static display at Henderson Executive Airport. The outdoor static display offers attendees a chance to see the latest and greatest that business aviation has to offer � all in one place. Many manufacturers are showing their newest products and modifications that are available, and the display features U.S. show debuts of some of the hottest aircraft, many of which have not yet been seen publicly in this country. National Aviation Hall of Fame Presents Combs Gates Award During NBAA2013
The National Aviation Hall of Fame (NAHF) today presented its annual Combs Gates Award to aviation artist Mike Machat, of Woodland Hills, CA, during NBAA2013. NAHF Chairman Phil Roberts presented Machat with a $20,000 cash award for his mural of iconic Douglas airliners built in Southern California that is on display in the Santa Monica Museum of Flying. "I wanted to pay tribute to the life and career and vision of Donald Wills Douglas," explained Machat. "I am truly honored and humbled to receive this award."
