Security, Safety, Professionalism Remained in View for NBAA and Industry in 2013
While the business aviation community faced significant challenges in 2013 – among them a controversial FAA plan for screening pilots for obstructive sleep apnea, a government shutdown and a sequester-driven proposal for shuttering contract air traffic control towers – the year also included some notable milestones. For example, the continuing work done by NBAA and its Member Companies to educate government security officials about the industry's unique operating needs and challenges resulted in a new Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) rule regarding flights from south of the border into the United States. Listen to this week's NBAA Flight Plan podcast for more on operations improvements in 2013 .

Cirrus Founders Among Newest to Be Inducted Into National Aviation Hall of Fame
Alan and Dale Klapmeier, founders of Cirrus Aircraft, are among the 2014 inductees announced recently by the National Aviation Hall of Fame. Cirrus produces the SR20 and SR22 models, many of which are used in business aviation. The SR series – which features composite construction, all-electric instrumentation and whole-aircraft parachutes – has become popular for business applications due in part to its speed, well-equipped instrument panels and the turbocharged SR22T's maximum operating altitude of 25,000 feet. In the past decade, several on-demand air taxi start-ups have chosen the SR22 as an alternative to light jets. Read more about Cirrus .

FEATURED STORY

Tablets Increasingly Common in Aircraft Maintenance Ops
In recent years, tablet computers like Apple's ubiquitous iPad have become common in business aircraft cockpits, and in a similar trend, maintenance departments are also increasingly turning toward tablets to assist their technicians. "On the maintenance side," said Jim Sparks, chairman of NBAA's Maintenance Committee, "in addition to the obvious benefits of accessing electronic aircraft support documentation, there are a significant number of tools available" on a tablet or phone. Meanwhile, the FAA is revising its guidance on the validity of electronic signatures for maintenance tasks and other tablet applications. Read more about the use of tablets in the maintenance department in the digital edition of Business Aviation Insider .
