NBAA Lauds Senate Committee's Passage of Small Aircraft Revitalization Act
The United States Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee last week passed S.1072, the Small Aircraft Revitalization Act, to revamp and enhance Part 23 light aircraft certification standards. The committee's voice vote advanced the bill for consideration by the full Senate, where it will be reconciled with similar legislation passed on July 17 in a vote of 411-0 by the U.S. House of Representatives. "These swift actions by Congress to overhaul certification standards for small aircraft and avionics demonstrates an impressive understanding by lawmakers of the factors that hinder development of new light aircraft and avionics," said NBAA President and CEO Ed Bolen. "NBAA joins with other aviation industry groups in support and anticipation of the Senate's full vote on the legislation. Read more about the legislation .

State Department Issues International Travel Alert
The U.S. Department of State issued an alert to U.S. citizens on the continued potential for terrorist attacks, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa, and possibly occurring in or emanating from the Arabian Peninsula. Current information suggests that al-Qaida and affiliated organizations continue to plan terrorist attacks both in the region and beyond, and that they may focus efforts to conduct attacks in the period between now and the end of August. Officials recommend U.S. citizens register their travel plans with the Consular Section of the U.S. Embassy through the State Department's travel registration website. This alert expires on Aug. 31. For more information, visit the Department of State website .

NBAA Advocacy Success in Northeast Region Built on Collaboration, Vigilance
While stringent curfew enforcement and other issues, such as noise abatement and access concerns, are continuing challenges to aviators in the Northeast, NBAA's Regional Representative Dean Saucier would be the first to say things are slowly improving. Saucier reports that he spends most of his time representing NBAA Members before local airport and other officials on matters such as these, but he also advocates for business aviation before local and state governments on a host of additional issues. In this week's edition of the NBAA Flight Plan podcast, Saucier provides an advocacy report for the NBAA Members based in his Northeastern U.S. region .

FEATURED STORY

Reduce Risk of Bird, Wildlife Collisions
The "Miracle on the Hudson," the ditching of US Airways Flight 1549 after multiple collisions with Canadian geese, is the most famous bird strike to date. But it was not a rare event – aircraft in U.S. airspace collide with wildlife 26 times a day, or 9,600 times a year, causing more than 200 fatalities since 1990. To reduce the risk of collision, Members may use the U.S. Air Force's Bird Avoidance Model, a tool for assessing the bird threat over specific parts of the country. The Air Force also offers a NEXRAD-based tool providing real-time reports of bird activity every 15 minutes. Learn more about these tools for avoiding bird strikes in the latest edition of Business Aviation Insider .

Business Aviation Continues Relief Missions to Haiti

NBAA Advocacy Leads to Improvement for Aviators in the Northeast

Years of effort by NBAA and other aviation organizations recently led to the passage in Pennsylvania of a bill that exempts the sale at retail or use of aircraft parts, services to aircraft, and aircraft components from a 6-percent sales tax. Two year ago in Maine, the governor signed a tax exemption for aviation maintenance and parts. Listen to NBAA Flight Plan for more on how advocacy efforts help Northeast aviators.
