This Course will cover topics related to Federal Aviation Regulations, meteorology, navigation, aircraft performance, airspace operations and situational awareness.

This Course identifies and explains issues to be considered when scheduling international flights. It will introduce and familiarize Attendees with the tools, resources and techniques needed to accurately plan an itinerary and arrange logistical support for an international trip. Course participants will work a trip from the initial request phase through the planning, operational and post-flight phases. The trip will be designed to illustrate and contextualize all the issues that must be considered for the successful completion of any international flight schedule. The importance of communicating trip requirements to the crew and passengers, along with the use of checklists, will be stressed. Additionally, the following topics will be addressed: regulatory and procedural differences, personal requirements (e.g. visas), diplomatic permits, health requirements, over-water operations, country requirements, crew flight, duty and rest requirements, aircraft and crew security, aircraft documentation and customs and immigration requirements.

The Conference begins with a welcome from the NBAA Schedulers & Dispatchers Committee Chairman Chad Hartke, Limolink, followed by remarks from NBAA President and CEO Ed Bolen.

Pilot, patriot, photographer and author, the life's journey of keynote speaker Major Brial Shul personifies the conference theme Pushing the Envelope: Beyond All Limits. Towards the end of the Vietnam war, Shul's aircraft was shot down near the Cambodian border. Unable to eject and sustaining life-threatening injuries, Shul was told he would never fly again. After months of intensive care, and fifteen major surgeries and physical therapy, he returned to active duty. He flew as an A-10 airshow demonstration pilot, became a Top Gun Instructor, and culminated his career by being selected to fly the Top Secret SR-71 spy plane - the fastest, highest flying jet in the world. After 20 years and 5,000 hours in fighter jets, Shul retired from the Air Force in 1990. Now a highly acclaimed author and photographer, Shul has authored five books on flying - all including his own original photography. Shul's phenomenal comeback story is truly one of triumph over tragedy and offers an inspiring message to everyone that we can always move forward, go farther, and succeed.

An Evolved Emergency Response Plan: Integration of Head and Heart

Effective emergency response planning requires integration of head and heart. Previous accident responses reveal that the human element of the response may represent 90% of the resources required, while 10% was dedicated to technical, investigative and safety issues. With the evolution of emergency planning in aviation, many can identify the critical tasks necessary in an emergency response. What is often missing is the necessary skill set required to effectively carry out those tasks. This Session will look at the research behind the most effective approach to helping people following an accident and how this approach is integrated with other critical components of an effective emergency response plan including activation, notification, operations, logistics and technical activities. The Session will include examples on the importance of "how" to carry out important tasks, as well as confirming those tasks that are important to a successful response.

Attendees will learn about mindful eating and eating for energy, which foods will best relieve ailing symptoms, and what unhealthy behaviors in flight departments may be leading to low energy and productivity. No matter where you travel around the world, most major cities are more accessible via helicopter than flying into a busy airport closest to downtown and then driving to your destination. This Session will help Attendees navigate through standard helicopter planning, as well as the decision on when to charter a helicopter for your passengers. Our panel of experienced rotary aircraft planners and pilots will also discuss the differences between an FBO and a heliport, and the challenges, such as adverse weather, that can change flight plans in a moment's notice.

Review will include details on the October implementation of the 2A New York/Philadelphia Redesign, the TRC (Tactical Route Coordinator) position at New York TRACON, traffic flow constraints during SWAP (Severe Weather Avoidance Plan) and how the numerous New York City airports interact with each other.

Flight schedulers often wonder why the answer is sometimes "Yes," and sometimes "No," when you ask if you can use a particular airport. How can something sometimes be safe, and sometimes not safe, at the same airport? Aircraft performance issues, in conjunction with weather variables, can make or break trips. Knowing an aircraft's capabilities and the variables that affect its performance can help a scheduler anticipate scheduling issues before they actually become problems. Attendees will learn about these variables, get a basic understanding of the pilots' world on the flight deck and the instruments they use to make safety of flight decisions.

Industry experts will provide step-by-step guidance that will help flight departments minimize fuel tax burdens, optimize consumption and efficiently shop for value. Attendees will leave this Session with a better understanding of how to develop fuel tax planning solutions for both Part 91 and 135 operators, the impact that both optimized flight plans and fuel plans can have on consumption, and how to leverage available industry resources into reduced fuel costs.

What are best practices and out-of-the box ideas using the many tools and technologies available to ensure schedulers and dispatchers meet operational needs, while attaining a healthy work/life balance? Panelists will discuss operations and perspectives from the many positions within a flight department. Also, the panel will examine one-person and multi-person, 24/7 operations with on-call, operational and human resource concerns and advanced planning initiatives to ensure quality employee satisfaction, retention and a positive work environment.
