Tweetup Offers Social Networking Tips for Business Aviation Professionals

October 11, 2011

Anyone who pays even the slightest attention to new trends understands that social media – Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and more – is transforming the way people interact and conduct business.

The social media revolution is having no less of an impact on business aviation. That was apparent Monday evening when NBAA sponsored its first NBAA Tweetup at the SpaceQuest Lounge in the Las Vegas Hilton. About 50 people, representing everyone from social media “newbies” to experts, attended the four-hour event.

For those new to terms like “hashtags”, “chirp” or “geotagging”, the evening amounted to nothing short of an eye-opening experience. Take, for example, pilot Kevin Heistrom, who is new to social media.

For him, the Tweetup offered an opportunity to learn how networking via social media can help him establish more connections that could help him land a job. “It’s something I’m not familiar with, so I’m glad I stopped by to see what it’s all about,” Heistrom said.

For experienced users, such as social media blogger Ludo Van Vooren of Aerospace eBusiness, @ludozone, the Tweetup provided an opportunity to spread the word about the medium’s ability to expand business relationships.

“I am a big proponent of how the Internet, and particularly social networking, can transform the aerospace industry,” he said. “So I’m here to meet with thought leaders in this group and, hopefully, give some advice to people who are new to the space.”

Judging from these favorable comments, as well as online tweets, the event accomplished its mission of educating people about how their business aviation peers are using social media to make new connections.

#NBAA11 Tweetup was great! Caught up with friends, met new ones. Nice just hanging out with #bizav social media "family." Thanks @jwolfnbaa

"I pleased that NBAA Members enjoyed the Tweetup and enjoyed it as much as I did," said NBAA Director of Internet Communications Jason Wolf. "NBAA Members took the lead with smaller Tweetups for NBAA2009 and NBAA2010. I'm glad that NBAA could sponsor this one, and hope that such events will grow in coming years."
